Why More Parents Are Choosing Organic in 2020

As parents we are sometimes overwhelmed by advice and new approaches, setting up your nursery can be daunting with so much choice on the market today. More and more parents are turning to organic diapers, clothing and blankets for their growing family and there are some great reasons why;

#1 Softness - Organic cotton is naturally softer then conventional cotton. Many items made from conventional cotton are pre-washed using softer before leaving the factory to give them a softer feel. With organic cotton there is no need for this addition processing and chemicals, it's natural softness and strength means organic cotton blankets, organic cotton sheets and rompers are perfect for babies and older children.

#2 Chemical free - Conventionally grown cotton only occupies 3% of the world’s farmland, but uses 25% of the world’s chemical pesticides. 77 million agricultural workers suffer poisoning from pesticides every year. Pesticide run off can be disastrous for wildlife – in 1995 floods in Alabama washed pesticides from a cotton plantation into Big Nance Creek killing 240,000 fish. Non-organic cotton damages soil quality, uses more energy and water, and releases higher levels of carbon dioxide. When we founded Lily & Mortimer we knew we could find a way to create beautiful products in a better way. Organic cotton is grown without the use of chemical fertilisers and pesticides, better for the health of the farmers and the environment.

#3 Reduce Childhood Allergies & Skin Problems - The chemicals used in some conventional cotton manufacturing processes can cause respiratory problems and allergies. Essential items such as organic cotton muslin swaddles sit close to the babies skin so the fact they are free from harmful chemicals helps them breath easy and sleep well.

#4 Kinder To The Planet - Cotton is a thirsty plant it can take upto 2700litres of water to grow enough conventional cotton to make one t-shirt. Organic cotton is typically rain fed so using significantly less water resources. It is also grown in arid climates meaning there is more of the precious resource for the families that live in these areas.
